About
My primary research interest is argumentation as studied from the perspective of rhetoric. I am trained as a rhetorician, and seek to understand the rhetorical distinctions between the discourses we label "poetry," "argumentation," "rhetoric," and "debate."
I am also a rhetorical critic and theorist, working primarily with the writings of the Beat Generation and the ideas of Kenneth Burke.
I study the pedagogy of rhetoric and argumentation, primarily in the teaching of intercollegiate debate. I direct the Debate Program at St. John's, which competes nationally and internationally in the British Parliamentary style of debating.
I find my research interests moving toward how we practice being a subject in and of a discourse that we co-create with others. I think debate is invaluable for practicing this.
